CEC Fact Sheet on PROP 7
Renewable energy is one of the best opportunities for Californians
to wean ourselves from fossil fuels and become energy independent.
Our state is already far behind on its goals for renewable energy, and
today’s policies aren’t fixing the problem. Proposition 7 provides real,
aggressive, attainable solutions that our lawmakers haven’t.
Not only has progress been slow, but California has gone backwards the
past few years. Current requirements specify that 20% of our electricty
come from solar, wind and other renewables by 2010. California’s big
utilities are nowhere near that target, and together are actually producing
less by percent in 2008 than they did a few years ago—not even 12%*
If we’re serious about reducing our dependence on fossil fuels, fighting climate change and achieving energy indepen-
dence, even 20% is not nearly enough. We need to replace all the power we currently receive from coal plants—almost
20%—with renewable energy sources, then start chipping away at the 60% that comes from nuclear and natural gas.
