CLAIM FROM PG&E AND SO. CAL. EDISON:

"Forces small wind and solar companies out of the market." FALSE

    TRUTH

Prop. 7 expands the renewable requirements for all utilities from 20% to 50%. All wind and solar companies will benefit from this market growth, regardless of size. It is basic economics.
CLAIM FROM PG&E AND SO. CAL. EDISON:

Measure locks in rates at 10% above market price and will lead to significant rate increases. FALSE

    TRUTH
It's PG&E and So. Cal. Edison that are raising the rates, not Prop. 7. PG&E is raising rates 6.5% this year; and Edison is raising rates 16% this year. The impact of Prop. 7 will never raise consumers' bills more than 3% over market price in its last year of full implementation: 2025. PG&E and So. Cal. Edison are hiding behind the smokescreen of their misleading TV commercials in the hope that consumers forget that it is the utilities which raise our rates.
CLAIM FROM PG&E AND SO. CAL. EDISON:

Creates market conditions ripe for manipulation, much like occurred during the last energy crisis. FALSE

    TRUTH

Absurd! The big utilities and their utility colleagues in ENRON caused the last energy crisis. We need to be vigilant of their manipulations. Prop. 7 guarantees that all utility contracts will be carefully reviewed before approval to assure that they are fair and reasonable.

Field Poll Finds Democrats & Independents Back Prop. 7,
Despite Avalanche of Dirty-Power Paid Ads, Race is Even

A new Field Poll of California voters released today found that pluralities of Democrats and Independent voters would vote in favor of Proposition 7, to increase renewable energy standards for all utilities. Strong opposition by Republican voters (60%) leaves the measure in a statistical dead heat. The Field poll’s margin of error is plus or minus 3.3%, and the total voter margin is 39% yes, 43% no, with 18% undecided.

The Field Poll findings demonstrate that the avalanche of dirty-power paid ads making false claims about Proposition 7 has not dissuaded the majority of California’s two largest voting groups from supporting the renewable energy proposition.

CEC Fact Sheet on PROP 7

Renewable energy is one of the best opportunities for Californians to wean ourselves from fossil fuels and become energy independent. Our state is already far behind on its goals for renewable energy, and today’s policies aren’t fixing the problem. Proposition 7 provides real, aggressive, attainable solutions that our lawmakers haven’t.

Not only has progress been slow, but California has gone backwards the past few years. Current requirements specify that 20% of our electricty come from solar, wind and other renewables by 2010. California’s big utilities are nowhere near that target, and together are actually producing less by percent in 2008 than they did a few years ago—not even 12%*

If we’re serious about reducing our dependence on fossil fuels, fighting climate change and achieving energy indepen- dence, even 20% is not nearly enough. We need to replace all the power we currently receive from coal plants—almost 20%—with renewable energy sources, then start chipping away at the 60% that comes from nuclear and natural gas.
